Astable - Speed control Using "Variable Resistor/Potentiometer"

Hi,

Basic astable timer working perfect.But when i used Variable Resistor/Potentiometer to control speed of output(here led blink)

, not working well. Need help on this.

I think the potentiometer should be connected to +5V:
